Outside the (Heart-Shaped) Box

Outside the (Heart-Shaped) Box

A lot of people have strong feelings about Valentine’s Day and the expectations around celebrating romance. We would like to challenge the norm and look at Valentine’s Day in a new way – as an opportunity to celebrate love, and the people in your life. Love doesn’t just have to be romantic – love can be between family members and friends too. This year, why not grab some of your favourite people and spend the day creating memories together?

Consider instead hosting a dinner party at your place for your closest friends. If you aren’t much of a cook, don’t worry!

There are a lot of great restaurants and options around Victoria – that are sure to be filled with couples sharing a romantic meal together. One of our favourites are the Boom Boxes that you can order from Boom + Batten. These boxes contain everything you need for a next-level cheese and charcuterie platter, and they are beautifully presented. (And if you haven’t been to the Boom + Batten restaurant yet, you need to go – they have a wonderful happy hour, delicious baked goods, and an incredible view of the harbour.)

Another great place to fill your charcuterie needs is the deli at Caffé Fantastico in Vic West, where you can create your own pizza box of delicacies, or ask the staff to curate some selections just for you.

If you want to get out of the house and head Downtown, there are plenty of places that you can go for an outside of the box night of fun. Check out Axe & Grind for a chance to throw some axes (also a great option for anyone who is particularly anti-Valentine’s), or Quazar’s for some old school pinball and arcade games. Going to an escape room with your friends is a great way to challenge yourselves and work together to complete puzzles and solve riddles – often resulting in lots of laughs and good times.

If you just want to shake it all off and do something low-key, warm drinks and a walk along the shore (we suggest Dallas Road for the great view, as well as plenty of dogs) is a great way to connect with the ones you love.

Memories can be created in the most simple and sincere ways, and spending quality time with the people you love is something that we sometimes take for granted. Valentine’s Day is a great time to change that behaviour! They say that kindness breeds kindness, and we couldn’t agree more. Pick up the phone and get a hold of that person you love – whether it be a friend or family member – and invite them to wander around the city with you. You may be surprised at the delights that you encounter…
